Chinese Ngohiong in Cebu

It was back in 2005 when I first tasted ngohiong, a common street food here in Cebu. It’s basically a fried vegetable lumpia filled with ubod (heart of palm) and singkamas (yam bean/native turnip) seasoned with Chinese 5 spice powder aka Ngohiong powder.

I may not have liked ngohiong the first time I tried it, but recently, I’ve been addicted to it! *nom* And just a couple of days ago, Val finally brought me to eat at the famous Chinese Ngohiong House near San Carlos University, main campus in Junquera (Ongkera) St., Cebu City.

We went there around 2 in the afternoon, but there’s still a pretty good crowd eating inside. I can’t imagine how it is at lunch time!

We only spent less than a hundred pesos for our lunch, but we were absolutely stuffed! Amazing, isn’t it? Here’s what I had on my plate:

I just had 2 puso (hanging rice), actually! Val had 3, haha! I also had chicken skin and crab meat, yum! We also like their stuffed eggs but we didn’t order because we’ve tried it already.

Sweet June Rain & Banana Split

The month of June has finally arrived. It’s been raining for the past few days here and I’m not sure if it means that the summer season is over. I hope not! Val and I are still planning to spend a couple of days of our anniversary month in the beach. Yep, we’re married for 2 years already. How time flies, doesn’t it? God is truly kind to bless us with so much love and happiness from the moment He united us under His church.

To celebrate the 1st day of June, Val and I shared a very sweet treat. No! Actually, we just had some really yummy bananas and chocolate syrup that would expire not long from now so Val went to buy ice cream so we could come up with banana split.

I don’t have a sweet tooth nor am I a fan of ice cream, but if you rarely eat them, they can actually become pretty delicious. And it is best shared with someone you love!

Beef Nacho Scoops Recipe

Val and I wanted to have something fun to eat, so we decided to make Beef Nacho Scoops. We’ve already made the same with round whole grain tortillas but it isn’t much fun to look at.

So we grabbed a pack of whole grain nacho scoops on our next visit to the grocery store.

Check out below how we made the yummy goodness that was this –

The recipe for our meat mixture is pretty much the same to our beef taco recipe. Basically, what you need are:  Read More »

California Maki and Kani Salad

Val and I are officially on a Japanese diet. LOL! Just kidding! We’ve been craving for a California roll lately and we decided to give the nearby Japanese store a visit. It was my first time to step inside that store and I liked what I saw, a one stop shop for everything Japanese! Plus, it’s just a walking distance from our place!

Thanks to the recipes and video tutorials available online. We did it!!! We are not yet experts in sushi making, but I’d say, I am very proud of what we’ve made. Here it is!

How To Make Restaurant Style Tacos

Last Sunday, Val and I went grocery shopping after the Mass. We suddenly craved for tacos after seeing boxes of taco shells piled up in the grocery shelf. Although we haven’t tried making them at home before, we decided to give it a try. We chose a pure corn, hard taco shell (Mega Mexicana), which includes a recipe for restaurant style tacos. I would have to agree that it was almost as good as eating in a restaurant. Here are the ingredients:

250 g ground beef
2 tbsp garlic, minced
2 tbsp onion, minced
3 tbsp oil
1/4 tsp cumin
1/8 tsp cayenne
salt and pepper

Saute onion and garlic in oil. Add ground beef and cook until brown. Add spices, salt and pepper to taste. To build your taco, line the bottom of your shell with salsa, add a layer of meat and ground cheese. You can microwave your tacos for about 30 seconds if you want your cheese to melt. You may also add a little bit of sour cream if you like. Then, load it up with veggies, such as shredded lettuce, diced white onion, bell pepper, cucumber and tomato.

It was so good, we are making them again soon!
